Abstract
Newbouldia laevis, which is commonly called the Boundary tree is a rntropical plant whose medicinal values have been in existence for quite rna long time. Plants are known to contain active metabolites such as rncardiac glycoside, flavonoids, alkaloid and tannins which possess rnmedical properties and are therefore harnessed for the treatment of rndifferent diseases. This present study was aimed at investigating the rnphytochemical and antinutritional properties of aqueous extract of N. rnlaevis leaves. Qualitative phytochemical analysis revealed the rnpresence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, tannins and cardiac rnglycosides. The N. laevis leave extract showed the presence of rnantinutritional compounds which include, Phytate (4.224 ± rn7.182mg%), Flavonoid (4.000±6.240mg%), Oxalate rn(0.081±0.105mg%), alkaloids (0.0032±0.0008mg%) Tannin (0.008 ± rn0.0032mg%). This result suggests that N. laevis leave extract contains rnbioactive compounds which have potential health benefit inherent in rnthem, additionally, there is also the presence of antinutritional factors rnwhich has a significant impact on nutritional value of this plant. rnHowever, further research is needed to explore the therapeutic values rnas well as safe use of this plant material.
